Basic Guide to Floor Pumps

A good floor pump at home makes it easy to maintain proper tire pressure. Most floor pumps can inflate narrow, high pressure road tires to more than 120psi with ease. Large volume off-road tires may require more strokes to inlfate, but the low pressures involved require less pumping effort.

Shop Floor Pumps
    Handle
    • Look for a handle that is easy to grip and fits your hands.
    • A cushioned or padded handle is nice for high pressure road tires.
    Gauge
    • Make sure the gauge reads more than 10 psi above the highest pressure you will inflate to.
    • A gauge mounted at the top of the pump is easier to read.
    • A guage with a bezel indicator makes it easier to see when you've reached the desired pressure.
    Head
    • Convertible heads require rearranging internal parts to switch between Presta valves and Schraeder valves.
    • Multi heads include two separate holes; one for Presta valves and one for Schraeder valves.
    • "Smart" heads work on either valve type.
    Barrel
    • Large diameter barrels inflate large volume off road tires quickly.
    • Small diameter barrels make it easier to inflate high pressure tires.
    • Some barrels have a steel casing for impact resistance and a plastic liner for smoother pumping.
    Base
    • Look for a large base that will be stable and easy to use with cycling shoes.
    • A folding base makes the pump easier to store and transport.
